Team Extreme

Wildcard entry Team Extreme is set to join the six full-season squads for a piece of the action as they race in China’s Olympic sailing city, Qingdao. The team is skippered and helmed by Portuguese sailor Bernardo Freitas, who competed in the 2012 Olympics in the 49er and has previously competed in the Extreme Sailing Series in 2013 and 2016.

Freitas is joined by British sailors Martin Evans, the 2015 UK Laser national champion, Tom Buggy, who brings valuable Extreme Sailing Series experience having sailed on multiple different teams in the Series since 2011, and Rob Partridge, who finished 16th in the foiling Moth world championships in 2016.

The team will be joined by Liu Xue (or Black, as he is also known), who competes for the team for the second time in his hometown, Qingdao. Black races onboard Dongfeng Race Team, the Chinese team that finished third in the last edition of the Volvo Ocean Race and are set to race again this year. Black has previously competed in the Series in 2013, 2014 and 2016.

Bernardo knows the elite-level, fast-paced Extreme Sailing Series, as he was part of the Sail Portugal team last year and the ROFF Cascais Sailing Team, the wildcard entry to the Porto Act in 2013. Bernardo represented Portugal in the 49er Skiff at the London 2012 Olympic Games finishing an impressive eighth place.

​British Sailing Team Laser sailor, Evans has since changes paths, now an expert hand on a GC32. Evans was the UK Laser National Champion in 2015, 12th Laser European Championships 2013 and the under 21 Laser World bronze medallist and European Silver medallist.

No stranger to the circuit, British multihull sailor Tom Buggy took the position of bowman with Italian team Lino Sonego Team Italia in 2015. Buggy, and the American-flagged wildcard syndicate for the Madeira Islands Act 2016. He now return with Team Extreme, trimming the headsail, hoping his vast background in the Series will put him in good stead in Qingdao.

​Foiling legend, Partridge came 16th in 2016 Moth world championships and now takes his place onboard the foiling GC32s. He has also placed 10th 470 Kiel Week and 2nd in the 29er world championships (class youth world champion) and 3rd in the ISAF youth world championships.
