SAP Extreme Sailing Team (DEN)

The Danish-flagged syndicate, SAP Extreme Sailing Team, is backed by world-leading software and software-services provider SAP who is also the Series’ Official Technical Partner. Co-skippers Gram-Hansen and Køstner both boast titles on the World Match Racing Tour as well as stints in the America’s Cup and are both old hands in the Extreme Sailing Series. Gram-Hansen takes turns on the helm with Kiwi Match Racer and America’s Cup sailor, Adam Minoprio, stepping back as coach when he is not on the boat. Minoprio will swap in as helm with Gram-Hansen throughout the season.

Three-time America’s Cup sailor Pierluigi de Felice returns as headsail trimmer while Mads Emil Stephensen, the youngest sailor in the team and silver medallist in the youth 49er World Championships, returns to the team as trim assist and grinder. British Moth sailor Richard Mason joins the crew in 2017 as bowman.<

Former teacher Jes Gram-Hansen sailed on board Mascalzone Latino in the 2007 Louis Vuitton Cup and won the 2009 World Match Racing Tour Danish open. Having competed on the circuit since 2012, Gram-Hansen helmed his team to their highest position in 2015, finishing the season in second on the podium. This season he takes a step back to allow Kiwi World Match Racing Tour champion Adam Minoprio to take the helm and takes the role of coach.

Køstner will look to do one better in 2017 as the team will focus on a podium finish. A World Match Racing Tour Champion, America’s Cup (32nd on Mascalzone) and Volvo Ocean Race sailor (Ericsson in-port race tactician), 2016 is Køstner’s sixth season on the Extreme Sailing Series™ global circuit.

The Kiwi helm, Minoprio is a crewmember of Groupama Team France, racing for the America’s Cup. Minoprio competed onboard GAC Pindar in the 2015 Series and brings with him an impressive CV; youngest ever sailor to win the World Match Racing Tour in 2009, 2nd place in the Volvo Ocean Race on Camper ETNZ 2011-12, and another 2nd place on Team Brunel during the 2014-15 race. Minoprio skippered wildcard team NORAUTO in Lisbon in 2016, finishing 2nd in the Act.

De Felice started sailing at the age of seven, racing optimists, before moving on to 420s and 470s. He boasts multiple World Championship titles and has competed at three America’s Cups, twice with the Italian syndicate Luna Rossa. He has also competed on the World Match Racing Tour. De Felice completed the Series with SAP Extreme Sailing in 2016.

One of the youngest sailors in the fleet, Stephensen is no stranger to high performance sailing, having raced with SAP Extreme Sailing Team on the 2015 and 2016 Series. Stephensen also won a silver medal at the youth 49er World Championships.

An experienced 470 and F18 sailor, Richard also competed in the 2014 Solitaire du Figaro. Having sailed GC32s before as part of the Monaco based team Malizia, competing in the GC32 Racing Tour in 2016, this will be his first year in the Extreme Sailing Series™.
