Spotlight on Porto!
- 20th June 2012
For the first time ever Porto, Portugal´s second largest city, will play host to Act 4 of the 2012 Extreme Sailing Series™ organised in association with Go On from the 5th-8th July. Now in its sixth year of competition, the 2012 Extreme Sailing Series will see the Extreme 40s race at eight venues around the world, across three continents.
Act 4 will be held on the famous Douro River, providing a perfect natural amphitheatre for the stadium style racing and excellent spectator views of the racecourse from the public Race Village located near the iconic Luís I iron bridge designed by one of Eiffel´s partners, Téophile Seyrig, where the Extreme 40 fleet will race close to the shore on the public days, 6th-8th July

At the mouth of the Douro, the hilly city of Porto is one of Europe’s most charismatic and undiscovered cities. This ancient port, which in recent years has undergone a remarkable regeneration, is steeped in history and tradition, best know for its narrow medieval alleyways, baroque churches, outstanding monuments by renowned architects, and of coarse the famous Porto wine, Porto was registered as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1996.
The action on the water will be complemented by the NeilPryde Racing Series featuring the new, ISAF universal one-design windsurfing class, the RS:One. After its successful debut in 2011 and most recently in Istanbul for Act 3, the Racing Series features a dynamic race format providing a real spectacle for the crowds and allowing windsurfers of all levels, ages and genders to compete together on a level playing field. The Racing Series will take place on 7 and 8 of July, including a night race with special LED-rigged sails planned for Saturday evening.
